Maxwell Finland at the Thorndike Memorial Laboratory, 1979

In academic medicine, individuals who are imaginative and skilled will achieve success. But to have a mentor such as Dr. Finland who took each fellow under his wing, provided by example the scientific discipline, the necessary work ethic, and the ability to ask the right question, develop an experimental design that would provide the best answer, and analyze the results critically, is an enduring gift. He was our professional father and is and will be a continuing part of our lives.

Finally, we honor a man who, with a friendly smile and a quiet and modest manner, has achieved great distinction not only because of his extraordinary contributions to American medicine, but also because of his benificent influence on so many: patients, students, colleagues and friends.

I know that we shall continue to visit Max in our minds throughout our lives. Max Finland was, and is, our role model, teacher and cheerleader. Let us pay heed to his most important message: we must serve this role for our younger colleagues and students. Only then shall we perpetuate his legacy.
