Provenance

Skull was exhumed from Phineas Gage's grave in San Francisco in 1867, with permission from his mother, Hannah Trussell Swetland Gage. Swetland Gage gave the skull to Phineas Gage's former physician, John Martyn Harlow. Harlow donated the skull, with the tamping iron the caused the injury to the skull, to the Warren Anatomical Museum in 1868.
