Letter to Senator Max Baucus, 1981

Avery was also outspoken on political and social issues, and was involved in legislation around topics like abortion, euthanasia, government child services programs, federal funding for science programs and research, Medicare and Medicaid regulations, and drug regulations. In this letter to Senator Max Baucus, she urges him to vote against Bill S.158, which sought “to provide that human life shall be deemed to exist from conception.”  Avery stated:

“As Physician-in-Chief of the Children’s Hospital (Boston), as one who cares about the right to a good life for all infants, I urge you to give pregnant women the option to decide whether or not to carry a pregnancy to term.”
