Abstract
Oral history interview with Janet McArthur, M.D. McArthur was known for encouraging women to enter the fields of medicine and athletics, and began her career in 1943 as one of the first female residents admitted to the Massachusetts General Hospital. She became the first female full professor at Harvard Medical School from Massachusetts General Hospital in 1972 when she was appointed Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology. Among the first American scientists to obtain public funding for research in reproductive physiology, Dr. McArthur was both a practicing physician and a research scientist. One of her major research interests was centered around defining the endocrinological bases for the menstrual patterns of female athletes.
