Established in 1973 as a standing committee of the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, the Joint Committee on the Status of Women (JCSW) has lobbied around issues including work/life balance, salary equity, and childcare at Harvard Medical School and the affiliated hospitals.

The JCSW won the 2011-2012 Sharon P. Clayborne Staff Diversity Award. This award was established to recognize individuals at Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Dental Medicine who have made significant achievements in moving the School toward being a diverse and inclusive community.

Women in Medicine: Guide for Classroom Use, circa 1984

The Joint Committee on the Status of Women sponsored an oral history project entitled "Women in Medicine" to document the experiences of women professors in the Harvard medical community, in their own words, and to capture data about the history and development of this community.

"Women in Medicine" was designed for use in social studies and science classes and in career counseling centers. Funded by the Joint Committee on the Status of Women and undertaken by Linda H. Brink and Geri Denterlein, nine videotaped profiles introduce students to distinguished women in academic medicine. A guide with biographies of the nine women and suggested classroom use was also created. Interviews are available via Onview.
