Fish, a physician and medical examiner at Amherst, compiled studies of gunshot residue; the item displayed shows a shot from a Smith and Wesson revolver at a distance of four inches. Fish was attempting to determine whether any differences would be apparent between suicidal and homicidal wounds.

Fish presented his findings to the Massachusetts Medico-Legal Society at its meeting on February 6, 1884, as “The external appearance of pistol-shot wounds,” and described some of results of his experiments:
I hope to demonstrate … that in pistol and revolver shots these gases of explosion, instead of passing with the ball through the skin, expend the greater part of their force upon the tissues at a point outside of the opening made by the ball. I can see that some particles of powder may cling to the ball and explode after passing through the skin. For, in firing a Colt’s revolver at twenty-eight inches, several grains of powder passed, probably with the ball, through blotting paper, and sprinkled the ash, left after burning, around the hole made by the ball in a second sheet of paper which was placed four inches behind the first one."
<dcterms:description>Taylor’s Medical jurisprudence was a standard manual for the study of legal medicine. It was first printed in London in 1844, and an American edition followed in the next year. At least twelve editions were produced by the end of the 19th century, with revisions and new editions published through the 20th century. In his introduction to this revision, Taylor states, “Since its first appearance in the year 1844, there have issued from the press fifteen thousand seven hundred and fifty copies. I regard this as a satisfactory proof of its practical utility to those members of the Medical and Legal professions for whose assistance it has been especially intended.”

Medical jurisprudence was the required text for legal medicine courses at Harvard as early as 1858, and it was still in use in 1904. The copy displayed here belonged to Barker Brooks Kent (1844-1873), a graduate of the Medical School in 1869, and was presumably used during his course work. The pages displayed concern the insanity plea and the M'Naughten rule.

They entertain very limited views of medicine, who suppose its objects and duties are confined exclusively to the knowledge and cure of diseases. Our science was intended to render other services to society. It was designed to extend its benefits to the protection of property and life, and to detect fraud and guilt in many of their forms. This honour has been conferred upon it by the bench and the bar, in all civilized countries both in ancient and modern times. That part of our science, which qualifies us to discharge these important civil duties, has been called medical jurisprudence…. The lectures you are about to attend upon … contain the rudiments of all that is necessary for you to know in order to render you competent witnesses in a court of justice.
The project was criticized for its methodology, however, and an ad hoc committee appointed to evaluate it determined that the project "did not present a research design supported by data but were instead written around conclusions" and that it would not be profitable to continue the research. The project was closed down on June 30, 1963.
The Research on Fatal Highway Collisions did print two volumes of its research papers and also this report by Murray D. Segal to the Highway Research Board. <dcterms:description>In the 1920s, New England heiress Frances Glessner Lee (d. 1962) became fascinated with the colorful crime-solving career of George Burgess Magrath (1870-1938), the medical examiner for Suffolk County and an instructor in legal medicine at Harvard Medical School. Mrs. Lee contributed funds to endow a professorship in legal medicine, a visiting lectureship, and a fellowship program and also crafted the Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death—a series of miniature crime scenes for student analysis. In 1933, she made an additional gift to establish the George Burgess Magrath Library of Legal Medicine and, as its honorary curator, continued to acquire and donate rare books and manuscripts in legal medicine and medical jurisprudence. By 1964, the Magrath Library held some 3,700 volumes, and when its holdings were transferred to the Countway Library, legal medicine and jurisprudence became significant subject strengths of the collection.

Highlights of the Magrath Library include rare trial accounts, works on criminology, toxicology, and poisoning, including a 15th century manuscript of Petrus de Abano’s De venenis, and a collection of unique material concerning Charles Guiteau, the assassin of President James A. Garfield, including poems written by Guiteau while in prison, his own copy of his autobiographical work The truth and the removal, and the diary of his spiritual counselor, William Watkin Hicks.
The hospital, under the direction of surgeon-in-chief, C. Winchester Dubouchet, was intended to care for wounded soldiers "irrespective of nationality." Its Medical Board made a proposal to universities in the United States to staff part of the hospital with rotating units of surgical personnel. Dr. George W. Crile (1864-1943) was at the head of the first unit, from Western Reserve University in Cleveland, which arrived at the end of 1914. The President and Corporation of Harvard University approved participation in the plan and, with the financial support of William Lindsay of Boston, who underwrote the venture, the second unit, headed by Harvey Cushing and Robert B. Greenough, was organized from Boston and went to Paris, serving from April 1 to July 1, 1915.</dcterms:description>

Cannon was joined to group of surgeons with the B.E.F. at Casualty Clearing Station No. 33 in Béthune, to study the effects of traumatic shock in association with war wounds. He worked during the summer and fall of 1917 with Captain John Fraser.
