<dcterms:description>Thucydides was a fifth-century Greek and eyewitness to the long struggle (431-404 B.C.) for dominance between the warring city-states of Athens and Sparta. De bello Peloponnesiaco, or The History of the Peloponnesian War, his contemporary account of events, is one of the earliest works of historical writing. The Italian humanist, Lorenzo Valla (1407-1457), was commissioned by Pope Nicholas V to make this translation from Greek. It was the first Latin edition of Thucydides and the only one produced during the fifteenth century.

In 430 B.C., just at the beginning of the war, Athens suffered an outbreak of plague which severely demoralized its citizens and killed the city's leader, Pericles. Thucydides himself was afflicted but survived and left a vivid description of the effects of the plague. </dcterms:description>

In this symposium, our four speakers endeavor to do the same, coming from different perspectives to examine the complex history of anatomical study. Join us as we examine anatomy through the lenses of ethics, art, and science.

Christina J. Hodge and Michele E. Morgan will outline the osteological, archaeological, and archival approaches to studying the collection of anatomized skeletal material found under Harvard’s Holden Chapel to illuminate the social and institutional contexts of early nineteenth-century anatomization. Naomi Slipp will look at anatomy from an artistic perspective, examining the materials produced by Dr. Henry Jacob Bigelow and artist Oscar Wallis as an example of the collaboration of 19th-century American art and medicine. And Sabine Hildebrandt, an internationally recognized expert on the ethics and history of anatomy in National Socialist Germany, will discuss the ethics of Eduard Pernkopf’s anatomy studies.
Note, particularly, the negative qualities of slyness, pride, and suspicion and the busts of Franz Joseph Gall (1758-1828) and Johann Gaspar Spurzheim (1776-1832) on the floor. In the lower right-hand corner can be discerned the supposed names of the artist, J. Lump, and the engraver, L. The hospital, under the direction of surgeon-in-chief, C. Winchester Dubouchet, was intended to care for wounded soldiers "irrespective of nationality." Its Medical Board made a proposal to universities in the United States to staff part of the hospital with rotating units of surgical personnel. Dr. George W. Crile (1864-1943) was at the head of the first unit, from Western Reserve University in Cleveland, which arrived at the end of 1914. The President and Corporation of Harvard University approved participation in the plan and, with the financial support of William Lindsay of Boston, who underwrote the venture, the second unit, headed by Harvey Cushing and Robert B. Greenough, was organized from Boston and went to Paris, serving from April 1 to July 1, 1915.</dcterms:description>

    <dcterms:description>The Soncino family was originally from Speyer, one of the German towns in which printing had an early impact. After a decree of expulsion in 1435, the family moved to the Italian town that lent the family its name. Soncino printed the first Hebrew Bible in Europe in 1488; the edition of the Mishnahin this exhibit was one of the last Hebrew books printed in Naples in 1492. The expulsion of the Jews from Spain in that same year led to massive emigration into Italy. A plague among the Jewish refugees in Naples, along with other unfortunate events, caused the eventual dissolution of the Jewish community in that city. It is unclear what became of Joshua Solomon Soncino, but it is known that his brother Gerson had taken refuge in northern Italy, where religious tolerance was more prevalent than in the south. Gerson Soncino eventually settled in Rimini, where he adopted the tower motif and verse from Proverbs as his printer’s mark – the first for a printer of Hebrew in Italy. The Soncino family was responsible for the printing of approximately 135 Hebrew books between 1483 and 1547.

Today its namesake, the New York-based Soncino Press, continues the tradition of publishing Judaica.
</dcterms:description>

The centrifugal force employed divides the heavier red blood cells from the lighter plasma.

Beginning in October 1948, weekly meetings of the Formed Elements Group of Cohn's laboratory staff and associates were held to discuss research and developments in plasma fractionation and blood preservation and storage. These meetings resulted in the establishment of the Blood Characterization and Preservation Laboratory in January, 1951.

The second piece of the unit is a clear plastic drum with a long metal cylinder threaded through its center.

    <dcterms:description>
The Canon medicinae, a compendium of medical knowledge and a guide to clinical teaching, was derived from Galenic and Hippocratic writings and infused by Avicenna with Arabic medical lore. The Canon includes detailed disquisitions on pathology, physiology, hygiene, therapeutics, and materia medica. The first three books were printed in Latin in 1472 and a complete edition appeared the following year. An encyclopedic and systematic treatise on medicine, it was the fundamental text in medieval and early Renaissance medical education. The text itself was read in the medical schools at Montpellier and Louvain as late as 1650, and Arnold C. Klebs described it as "one of the most significant intellectual phenomena of all times." Avicenna's Canonwas translated into Hebrew in 1279.

This edition of Avicenna’s Canon is its first appearance in print as well as the first printing of a medical treatise in Hebrew—and the only one produced during the fifteenth century. Hebrew printing in the 15th century was restricted to Italy and the Iberian peninsula; after the expulsion from Spain in 1492, printers in Italy and Portugal produced a very small number of works. The Gunzenhauser family founded the first Hebrew press in Naples in 1486; this edition of the Canonwas one of the last Hebrew books printed in that city.
</dcterms:description>
