The preparation was originally collected and mounted by the Army Medical Museum in Washington, D.C., most likely number 460. Army Medical Museum 460 was a gunshot fracture of the femur from an Union soldier in the American Civil War. Inscription: in pencil on bottom of base: "6692 / 12-3 / Civil War"; in red paint on bone: "6692"
Abstract
Distal end of left femur with lead ball embedded in lateral condyle and fracture. Pieces joined with nails. Epiphysis attached with hinge and hook. Mounted to two brass posts on wooden base painted black. Bone is from an unidentified solider in the American Civil War.

Provenance
Preparation was originally collected by and contributed to the Army Medical Museum in Washington, D.C by Assistant Surgeon William Moss, United States Volunteers. The specimen appears as 460 in the 1863 Army Medical Museum catalogue. It was transferred to Jeffries Wyman between 1863 - 1874 and formerly resided in his museum. At his death in 1874 Wyman left the preparation to the Boston Society for Natural History who then transferred it to the Warren Anatomical Museum.
