At the request of Robert C. Winthrop, president of the Massachusetts Historical Society, Holmes annotated the text and presented a paper on it to the society in 1862; he also then incorporated the Stafford recipes into his introductory lecture at Harvard that November. Holmes said, “Whatever we may think of Dr. Stafford’s practice, it is not certain that his patients would all have done better under the treatment of the present day. (Johann Gaspar), 1776-1832 Description An account of the resource During the early 1830s, Holmes was enrolled at Harvard Medical School, but also sought tuition privately with Dr. James Jackson. Of Holmes, Jackson said to his son, “He can tell you much that is interesting. Do not mind his apparent frivolity and you will soon find that he is intelligent and well-informed. He has the true zeal." Two volumes of Holmes’ notes on Jackson’s lectures have survived. Here, on November 15, 1832, Jackson comments on the fever and death of phrenologist Johann Gaspar Spurzheim, who had been lecturing in Boston and died five days earlier. This exists however in three cases out of four, and in nine out of ten there is slight effusion beneath this mean because: Pia mater red prow fulness of small vessels, but no effusion between convolutions. Redness is not necessarily sign of inflammation. As there was no thickening of effusion, the inflammation cannot account for the disease. Thorax. Organs healthy. Abdomin. Inflammation on night sick of pecitoneum, but not of an active kind. During life there had been no tendencies of the abdominen. He was also asked by the New Hampshire Alpha chapter of Phi Beta Kappa to deliver a poem at Dartmouth’s commencement in 1839. The dinner was held at Delmonico’s on April 12; the symbol of the event, embossed on the cover of the menu and a souvenir booklet of the proceedings, was a crossed scalpel and pen, as Holmes was “skilled to dissect with both.” Dr. Fordyce Barker, president of the New York Academy of Medicine, was the honorary chairman of the event, and notable figures among the two hundred guests included Drs. Alonzo Clark, S. Weir Mitchell, Austin Flint, John Shaw Billings, Henry Jacob Bigelow, Samuel D. Gross, and William Pepper. In response to the toasts and speeches, Holmes delivered a 2,000 word poem. He bequeathed his fortune to the University of Minnesota and so established the Charles Fremont Dight Institute for the Promotion of Human Genetics in 1941 to provide lectures, educational opportunities, and genetic counseling services to the public and foster research. Title A name given to the resource A group of deaf-mute families from Maine Subject The topic of the resource Bell, Alexander Graham, 1847-1922 Eugenics Genealogical tables Description An account of the resource As part of his research on deafness, Alexander Graham Bell made statistical analyses of the deaf-mutes and determined that deafness was hereditary and that the number of intermarriages between deaf-mutes was high and growing. He concluded that “if the laws of heredity that are known to hold in the case of animals also apply to man, the intermarriage of congenital deaf-mutes through a number of successive generations should result in the formation of a deaf-mute variety of the human race…. The indications are that the congenital deaf-mutes of the country are increasing at a greater rate than the population at large; and the deaf-mute children of deaf-mutes at a greater rate than the congenital deaf-mute population.”Bell went on the speculate about the possibility of legislation to forbid the intermarriage of deaf-mutes but favored determining the causes of intermarriage and discouraging or removing them. Bell presented his findings to the National Academy of Sciences on November 13, 1883, and his work was subsequently printed as part of the Academy’s Memoirs series. Meacham, a former carriage-maker in Massachusetts, joined the 32nd Massachusetts Volunteers; his arm was blown off by a shell near Petersburg in June, 1864. He printed and sold this pamphlet to make a living for himself and his ailing wife. In this account of his war experiences, Meacham says, "As we were standing there, a shell came through one man and then exploded, taking my right arm off, and killing four of my comrades, making five lives destroyed and one wounded. I never expected to get home or even off the field, but I was bound to do all I could... I was at this time one mile from any surgical assistance, and walked that distance, while the blood was fast leaving me, notwithstanding I had bandaged the arm as tight as possible.... I was so weak as to be unable to walk, or hardly stand.... I had not long to wait before the surgeon came along, and at my earnest request, I was taken to the amputating room and placed on the table. This is the last that I remember until my arm was amputated. Army. -- Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, 7th (1861-1864) Description An account of the resource A graduate of Harvard Medical School in 1853, Zabdiel Boylston Adams enlisted in 1861, joining the 7th Massachusetts Volunteers as an assistant surgeon. He was later a captain with the 56th Massachusetts Volunteers. Adams was wounded at Orange Plank Road during the Battle of the Wilderness and taken captive, spending four months in Confederate prisons in Virginia. After the war he had a medical practice in Framingham, Mass. and was medical examiner of the Eighth Middlesex District from 1890 to 1902. He was an ardent advocate of vaccination.
