<dcterms:description>While attached to Base Hospital No. 6 in the summer of 1918, Paul Dudley White examined and analyzed convalescent gassed soldiers to determine their fitness for return to duty. He devised a number of respiratory and exercise tests for the soldiers, including a 100-meter run wearing a gas mask: "The run provided the exertion and the gas mask the mental spur. Bad general appearance, breathlessness, pain, faintness, cough, extreme tachycardia and exhaustion were the conditions looked for at the finish of the run and helped decide on the fitness of the individual. This test was used on about 2000 soldiers."

The passage displayed from Paul Dudley White's diary discusses the tests. He published his results after the war as "Observations on Some Tests of Physical Fitness," in the American Journal of the Medical Sciences, in 1920.

White's war diaries provide a detailed and vivid account of his medical and surgical work and hospital experiences in Camiers. The passage displayed recounts a case of shell shock following an attack during the Battle of the Somme.

I received five admissions in C9 last night, all of them shell shock cases from the Morval fighting on Monday. All but one were badly buried and had exceedingly narrow escapes, one especially who was almost suffocated under 6 feet of earth as the result of a Boche shell explosion. His comrade was dead when they dug him out. He himself was unconscious. He complains now of headache and dizziness, the usual story. The more severe shell shocks have ringing in their ears, nightmares and many are aphasic. One of my five who came in yesterday cannot say a word, though he is apparently perfectly rational. I found him with his clothes on, sitting on the side of his cot, shaking all over. He tries to speak but doesn't utter a word, merely an inarticulate sound at times. The more he tries, the more he trembles and shakes. When I asked him for the address of his next-of-kin, he showed me a picture of his wife and baby and then after much effort managed to scrawl out Paislie, Scotland. One of the shell shock cases which came in last week was somewhat similar except that he constantly made grimaces.

The months and years of intimate association under conditions rarely easy, often difficult, occasionally very trying, have developed a working force of extraordinary capacity, the value of which has been generously recognized. But the work which this force can do has not ended with the armistice and will not end with the peace treaty. The peace of the world will require for its maintenance the development of the same qualities which the Staff of "No. 22" developed and demonstrated at Camiers. Recognition of opportunity and fulfillment of obligation may require that the power there acquired by exercised for years to come in order to hold and increase the gain which War has bought at such a price. The Staff of the Harvard Unit acquired tremendous capacity for the work it undertook and has achieved success and commendation, if it has also acquired vision, it has achieved immortality.
