An account of the resource
<em>The Aesculapiad</em>, the yearbook for Harvard Medical School, first appeared in 1924, but it had this unique precursor in 1906, in conjunction with the opening of the new buildings. The yearbook contains photographs of the faculty and the 68 graduating students who received medical degrees at Commencement on June 27, 1906. It includes views of the old and new buildings and some local landmarks, such as the F. H. Thomas Company on Boylston Street, where the students could acquire medical books and supplies. Dr. William B. Bartlett of the Class of 1906 also used this yearbook to record notes on his 25th and 45th reunions.

Description
An account of the resource
Students attended lectures in the basement of Harvard Hall, but by 1797, the condition of this facility was described—at least for Aaron Dexter's lectures on chemistry—as "unhealthy, inconvenient, and disgraceful," and new space was then provided in Holden Chapel by 1800. One room each was allotted to the professors of physic and chemistry, and John Warren's anatomical and surgical lectures and demonstrations were delivered in the room above.

Description
An account of the resource
While few early photographs exist of the Harvard Medical School building on North Grove Street, considerable information about the structure and its interior can be found, ironically, in the published transcripts of the 1850 murder trial of John W. Webster (1793-1850). Dr. George Parkman, a noted Boston physician and Harvard benefactor, disappeared on November 23, 1849, and a subsequent search of the premises of the Medical School revealed parts of a human body—including artificial teeth—in the laboratory of Dr. John W. Webster, Harvard’s Erving Professor of Chemistry. Webster was convicted of the murder of Parkman and executed on August 30, 1850.
<p>This trial transcript with drawings of the facility give some idea of the small size of Harvard Medical School at this time. The plan of Dr. Webster’s laboratory shows the locations of the tea-chest, furnace, and privy where the remains of George Parkman were discovered.</p>

Description
An account of the resource
In 1847, Harvard Medical School erected a new building, on North Grove Street, adjoining Massachusetts General Hospital, on land donated by Dr. George Parkman—whose body would all too soon be found buried beneath it. The school building itself had nearly doubled in size (134 feet long and 60 feet wide), and the 1849 catalogue described it as <em>"…of ample dimensions, and well warmed and ventilated throughout. It contains, on the second floor, two large Lecture rooms, the Chemical Laboratory, and the Library. On the floor above are the Theatre, in which the Lectures on Anatomy, Surgery and Pathological Anatomy, are delivered, the Professors' and Demonstrators' rooms…. The ground floor is occupied by the Janitor's apartments, rooms attached to the laboratory, etc. The Dissecting Room is a separate hall attached to the main building."</em>
<p>The North Grove Street building also provided accommodation for the institution's newest educational asset—the Warren Anatomical Museum.</p>

Description
An account of the resource
The Harvard Corporation, at the instigation of the Medical Faculty, petitioned the Massachusetts state legislature for funds to build an adequate home for the Medical School. The Faculty received a grant of $18,000 to obtain land and erect the first structure specifically for its needs, a brick building on Mason Street, near Boston Common. The new facility opened in 1816, and while the Medical School prospectus described it as <em>"large and handsome…. Its apartments are spacious and convenient,"</em> the structure measured only 83 feet long and 43 feet wide. The Mason Street building did include two amphitheater-style lecture halls, an anatomical theater, chemical laboratory, dissecting rooms, and a 3,000 volume library, and its interior was illuminated by a skylight. Because of the state funding for its construction, the building was often referred to as the "Massachusetts Medical College." Harvard would occupy the Mason Street building for the next twenty years.

Description
An account of the resource
This 19th century guidebook to Harvard University describes the current—and overcrowded—conditions of the Medical School on North Grove Street as well as some of the collections of the Warren Anatomical Museum. A building on Cambridge Street was used for additional laboratory space at this time, and a fund-raising campaign was underway to erect better accommodations.
