He then returned the following year as part of the Massachusetts General Hospital unit at the A.E.F.'s Base Hospital No. 6.
White's war diaries provide a detailed and vivid account of his medical and surgical work and hospital experiences in Camiers. The passage displayed recounts a case of shell shock following an attack during the Battle of the Somme.
I received five admissions in C9 last night, all of them shell shock cases from the Morval fighting on Monday. All but one were badly buried and had exceedingly narrow escapes, one especially who was almost suffocated under 6 feet of earth as the result of a Boche shell explosion. His comrade was dead when they dug him out. He himself was unconscious. He complains now of headache and dizziness, the usual story. The more severe shell shocks have ringing in their ears, nightmares and many are aphasic. One of my five who came in yesterday cannot say a word, though he is apparently perfectly rational. I found him with his clothes on, sitting on the side of his cot, shaking all over. He tries to speak but doesn't utter a word, merely an inarticulate sound at times. The more he tries, the more he trembles and shakes. When I asked him for the address of his next-of-kin, he showed me a picture of his wife and baby and then after much effort managed to scrawl out Paislie, Scotland. One of the shell shock cases which came in last week was somewhat similar except that he constantly made grimaces.

Description
An account of the resource
At the conclusion of service with the British army in France, the personnel of the Harvard Unit were given this printed communication, extending the thanks of Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig as well as the commendation of Hugh Cabot:
The months and years of intimate association under conditions rarely easy, often difficult, occasionally very trying, have developed a working force of extraordinary capacity, the value of which has been generously recognized. But the work which this force can do has not ended with the armistice and will not end with the peace treaty. The peace of the world will require for its maintenance the development of the same qualities which the Staff of "No. 22" developed and demonstrated at Camiers. Recognition of opportunity and fulfillment of obligation may require that the power there acquired by exercised for years to come in order to hold and increase the gain which War has bought at such a price. The Staff of the Harvard Unit acquired tremendous capacity for the work it undertook and has achieved success and commendation, if it has also acquired vision, it has achieved immortality.

As wounded soldiers were evacuated from the battlefield for hospital treatment, each was issued a field medical card for identification with a brief diagnosis or assessment; the card was in a window envelope and tied to the individual, with red-edged envelopes used to denote severe or urgent cases.
When more detailed information was needed, the AFI 1237 was completed, as in this example from a patient admitted to General Hospital No. 22.

Mary Blanche Wallace (1892-1979) of Woburn served as a nurse with the third Harvard Surgical Unit, working at General Hospital No. 22 from June 11, 1916, to June 9, 1917. She then returned to France in April 1918 as a member of the American Red Cross Nursing Service, working in hospitals through the end of the war. Blanche Wallis documented her experiences in two scrapbooks filled with newsclippings, photographs, ephemera and memorabilia.
According to the newspaper coverage, “The only identifying insignia that the surgeons and nurses got at the start, at least, were tags for their hand-baggage, containing their names and the number of their staterooms on board the steamer Andania; and white arm-bands, with the Gothic letters in crimson, “H.U.,” which stands for Harvard University, as well as for Harvard Unit.” Blanche Wallis is one of the nurses in the newsclipping; they all, along with Hugh Cabot, who was in charge of the third unit, are wearing the identifying arm badge.

Description
An account of the resource
Armband worn by members of the Harvard Surgical Unit en route to France during World War I.
According to the newspaper coverage, “The only identifying insignia that the surgeons and nurses got at the start, at least, were tags for their hand-baggage, containing their names and the number of their staterooms on board the steamer Andania; and white arm-bands, with the Gothic letters in crimson, “H.U.,” which stands for Harvard University, as well as for Harvard Unit.”
