Symposia (conferences)

Anatomists throughout history have worked to discover new angles of approach to the human body in order to reach the fullest understanding of its complexities. In this symposium, our four speakers endeavor to do the same, coming from different perspectives to examine the complex history of anatomical study. Join us as we examine anatomy through the lenses of ethics, art, and science.
Christina J. Hodge and Michele E. Morgan will outline the osteological, archaeological, and archival approaches to studying the collection of anatomized skeletal material found under Harvard’s Holden Chapel to illuminate the social and institutional contexts of early nineteenth-century anatomization. Naomi Slipp will look at anatomy from an artistic perspective, examining the materials produced by Dr. Henry Jacob Bigelow and artist Oscar Wallis as an example of the collaboration of 19th-century American art and medicine. And Sabine Hildebrandt, an internationally recognized expert on the ethics and history of anatomy in National Socialist Germany, will discuss the ethics of Eduard Pernkopf’s anatomy studies.

Anatomy
Warren, John, 1874-1928
Medical illustrations
This is one of the several hundred original drawings produced by H. F. Aitken and eventually published in <em>Warren's handbook</em>. The text accompanying this illustration states, <em>"The side of the skull has been cut away; the brain has been removed leaving the falx cerebri; the tunica mucosa oris is held up by hooks showing the glandula sublingualis; most of the clavicula is removed. The first rib, the trachea, glandula thyreoidea, and the cervical transverse processes, together with cut ends of the cervical nerves, are shown."</em>

Excerpts
Medical illustrations
The lineal descendant of John Warren and John Collins Warren, John Warren (1874-1928) received a degree from the Medical School in 1900; he became a professor of anatomy at Harvard and was noted for his dissection work. During the last years of his life, Warren made over 400 preparations as teaching illustrations and commissioned artist Hamlet Frederick Aitken to reproduce them for a projected topographical atlas and handbook for dissection. At Warren's death, the preparations and illustrations were bequeathed to the Department of Anatomy. Robert Montraville Green (1880-1955) provided descriptive text and saw the project through to publication. This copy of <em>Warren's handbook</em> belonged to Green and contains some of his emendations.

Anatomy : descriptive and surgical
Gray, Henry, 1825-1861
Anatomy
Medical illustrations
<p>With dissections by Henry Gray, lecturer on anatomy, and H. V. Carter, demonstrator of anatomy at Saint George's Hospital, London, Gray's <em>Anatomy</em> quickly became a standard text for medical students. It first appeared in the U.S. in 1859 and became required reading for first-year students at Harvard as early as 1861. The fortieth edition appeared in 2008, 150 years after its first publication.</p>
<p>This copy of the first edition was in the library of Oliver Wendell Holmes.</p>

Human dissection
The Harvard Medical School student in the 1890s attended anatomy lectures four times each week, with additional hours devoted to practical anatomical dissection. Ralph C. Larrabee, who received a medical degree from Harvard in 1897, preserved his notes from his courses in first-year and advanced anatomy as well as his recitation sessions. Displayed are passages related to lectures on the skull as a whole and the nasal cavities by Thomas Dwight; the large teaching skulls made by J. H. Emerton for Thomas Dwight's lectures would have been available at this time. The instructions for the dissecting-room were issued by Franklin Dexter (1857-1927), the Demonstrator of Anatomy.
