Dear Joe,
The Prize is a great thing! The third surgical Nobel in US history - as nearly as I can determine. While I had nominated you (as I am sure others had, also) for a few years, I am reasonably certain that it was George Hitchings' backup that made the difference. My ignorance of the bone marrow story is sufficient so that I never had thought of Don Thomas! Remarkable for PBBH! Do you remember Tom Starzl's article where he said ... "If hospitals could get the Nobel it should be PBBH."? Believe it was in the AMA a couple of years ago.

Your handling of the TV spots and all the publicity has been completely graceful - as of course if would be. The mixture of positive assurance and natural

modesty helps to reassure the great American Public that "all is still quite well with American Medicine" despite all the negative vibes. There certainly is an opportunity for public image-repair in this prize - and you have made the most of it. All physicians should be - and are - grateful! Quite a contrast with the physicist who said he was "Against it ... but would gladly accept anyway".

Amusing that Marion has the son of one Nobelist and the dwelling of another - Henry Kendall.

Thanks so much for coming to "The Dinner" in SFO - and your kind remarks. Much appreciated by Kathy and me! The Professorship is very exciting and all your generosity and

work through the HMS office have been so basic to success.

Looking back on those early transplant days, sometime it would be fun to retrace the crucial dates. The Home cases - when did Merrill take over for Miller? - your demonstration that the pelvic site was better than the thigh ..... did David ever use a pelvic site - the hard years between 1954 and 1962 - the details of Riteris .... and the first immunosuppressant patient ("BW322") was it April 15 1962 .... ? The impact of Schwartz-Dameshek - the early work with Roy C. - dates of the first long success in our

labs with drugs. How much did we do with mustard-Cytoxan? Whatever happened to local radiation of the kidney -?

I know you will put this all together for your Stockholm talk - that will be an historic landmark.

Do you have the date for that now? When you have, do let us know! -

Welll ..... what events - what history .... what wonderful human beings working together ... and what fun!

Cheers to you and Bobby - richly deserved by both of you -

All best.
