Provenance

Drawing was created by Oscar Wallis on March 26, 1852 for Harvard Medical School physician Henry Jacob Bigelow. Bigelow hired Wallis to draw tumors excised by Bigelow or other Massachusetts General Hospital surgeons for a manuscript on surgery that Bigelow was developing. Bigelow decided not to publish the volume after a similar work he considered superior was published.
