Contains Southard's notes and drafts for his writings; correspondence with colleagues on medical matters; copies of lectures; medical reports; papers pertaining to Southard's biography; and related material. Writings files include notes, drafts, correspondence, data, reprints, photographs and lantern slides for Anatomy of Mental Disease, an unpublished book Southard was writing, and for papers by Southard, M. M. Canavan (1879-1953), and others. Correspondence concerns such matters as medical cases; studies of alcoholism, criminology and mental disorders; and laboratory work. Additional material includes notes and data from the Boston Psychopathic Hospital; reports on psychiatric hospitals; autopsy reports, 1903-1910; Southard's lectures, 1916, to psychiatry class at Harvard Medical School; a few patient records; typed account of his legal testimony; and several of his poems, 1893, 1919. Other papers pertain to Frederick P. Gay's biography of Southard, The Open Mind, and include Gay's correspondence with Southard's colleagues; Gay's correspondence with his publishers; printed reviews, 1937-1940; letters of congratulation; and some biographical information.
