Rectangular oil painting of Chinese girl with large tumor on hip. Painting background color is dark green-brown. Girl is in seated position with head turned looking over her right shoulder. Right arm is visible. Girl is wearing dark clothing on lower half of body and blue clothing on upper half of body. Clothing is parted at site of tumor.

This oil painting is one of more than one hundred paintings by Lam Qua (1801-1860), a Chinese painter who was commissioned by American medical missionary Dr. Peter Parker (1804-1888) to paint images of Dr. Parker’s patients with unique maladies, primarily neoplasms of large size. This particular painting was created circa 1837 in Canton (Guangzhou), China. It was found in the collections of the Harvard Medical Library, and in 2012 was transferred to the Warren Anatomical Museum.
