Professor of Hygiene at Harvard, Roger I. Lee was a member of the Surgical Unit in 1915. He was a Major in the Medical Reserve Corps at the United States' entry into the war. Assigned to Base Hospital No. 5, Lee was its officer in command through most of 1918.
Late in his life, Roger I. Lee published these extracts from letters written almost daily to his then fiancée, Ella Lowell Lyman. They letters give a vivid portrayal of the ordinary experiences of camp life at Base Hospital No. 5.
