"Breast Feeding Comes of Age," The Journal of the American Medical Association
25 March 1950

At the end of the article in the “Abstract of Discussion,” Dr. Frank Richardson wrote the following, “This paper is not to be taken as propaganda for breast feeding…This paper incorporates something that to the best of my knowledge has never before been presented, namely, a review of the literature on breast feeding…”

Letter from Anne P. Forbes, M.D. to Frank Howard Richardson, M.D.
18 April 1950

When she wrote this letter, Anne Pappenheimer Forbes had been practicing medicine for 14 years. Although Dr. Forbes did not yet have a major academic appointment, she was confident enough to send Dr. Richardson “a few comments” she “[felt] compelled to make.”
She closed her letter with the following statement, “I repeat, nursing is not a scientific procedure. It is a procedure which science has not yet equaled.”
