Surgeon George Hayward performed the second operation employing ether at Massachusetts General Hospital on October 17, 1846, and then the first capital operation on November 7.  The following year, on April 12, he described his experiences to the Boston Society for Medical Improvement and then published the account in the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal on April 21.
